Anticipation

Disposable Containers I will give up disposable containers because I am used to eating a lot of food that usually is disposable and ultimately they are not healthy for me. It is a hard task for me but I think I should really change the way I eat and this project can aid me to achieve this. Furthermore, I will only eat food from the dining hall and only think water from my water bottle. I will also do this challenge with Albert Xu and we will be constantly checking up on each other to make sure that we do not get side tracked or tempted by the food that our friends around us might be eating. The hardest part will be staying in school and not going out to eat with my friends that will constantly try to provoke me with my favorite food that I order weekly.

My Death

As I was walking around Mexico city amazed by the chaos that people live with daily, I began to reflect back upon my life in America and compare the two places. Suddenly, I heard people screaming and some running out of a small door that seemed almost impossible to be a store or business. The dramatic people provoked me to go in and see what has happened, thus as I walked closer to the crowd, I began to hear little whispers and people pointing. Slowly walking in, there was complete silence and some select few in the corner laughing and talking. The only light available was in the middle of the room and as I walked in, I saw hay and a fenced circle. Thoughts began to flow in my mind and my imagination got to me until I saw the dead man. As I was shocked, I asked one of the locals about the situation and they told me that they hold these fights for entertainment and the fighters are gambled. This man who died, Andrew, was a crowd favorite and was fighting as his job to support his family. Consequently, today he faced his death and most people think its because of the nasal bone getting punch up into the nerves of the brain.

Character Analysis

Brett is a character that demonstrates the epitome of someone that wastes his or her time by trying to runaway from reality. She is well known for her good looks and her social life. I believe that she is someone that no one should become or seek to become because although her life seems fast pace and “fun”, in truth, she is just in pain and seeks comfort. Furthermore, her personality that is illustrated throughout the book makes her seem like a very superficial person that is only interested in her self. For example, the conversation with Jake and how she used to love but cannot marry him because of the certain damages Jake went through during the war makes it impossible for her to gain sexual pleasure. Although this can be interpreted in many different ways, it gives me an impression that she is only into the parties and sex rather than settling down and loving something. She is scared to love because of the past incident with the war that happened to her loved one. Her pain she is trying to cope does not justify her actions that she is constantly doing that only makes her seem irresponsible and promiscuous.

The Meaning of Life

The meaning of Life In the book, The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway demonstrates the lives of people after the Great War; specifically, the “lost generation”(people who were affected by the war and fled to Europe in search of a purpose). People like Brett and Jake do not have a purpose to live because all they do with their lives is try to escape reality. Reality has become a burden for these people in the story and in the search for life; they turn to alcohol and parties. These do not actually help them at all and in fact, this makes them get away further from life. I believe that these characters will never find the meaning of life and will keep living the scandalous lives they live now because they are all mentally fragile. I do not think they are capable of finding enough inner strength to let go of the grudges from before and face reality and the cards they are dealt. Alcohol, sex, and parties are the only things that let’s them forget pain and this is why these things have become almost a ritual for them.
